Samsung SGH-i780
When it comes to designing WinMo phones with keypads, Samsung is the reigning champ. Its class-leading BlackJack phones are packed to the seams with features while being encased in a sexy millimeters-thin shell. The i780 is no different. Of course Samsung made sure that it's loaded with all the connectivity features you'd expect from a 3G/HSDPA-era phone while adding a few surprises.
The i780 unexpectedly uses a touchscreen as a departure from the BlackJacks. Powered by Windows Mobile 6.0, the i780 has a unique center button that doubles as a touchpad. When used with the QWERTY keypad, this three-way input scheme is extremely flexible. Moving your thumb on the thumbpad moves a cursor onscreen. With only 2.5 inches of real estate, clicking via the touchpad is quicker and more accurate than using your fingers or the stylus.
If you have the need for speed, the i780's CPU has ample muscle to go about everyday tasks, including more intensive ones like playing unprocessed Xvid files. It's a very capable smart phone that's at par with its touchscreen-only rivals. Other additions such as the built-in GPS with A-GPS works well assuming you can install the software from Mapking or Garmin. Our test unit didn't come with any pre-installed GPS software.
Considering that Samsung's Card Wheel interface was very effective in its WinMo phones, it's a surprise that the i780's home screen has been customized. There are, however, four tabs with customizable shortcuts on the home screen. The QWERTY keys are still topnotch but we still wished Samsung didn't remove the click wheel. Ed Geronia
